Your Options in the USB External Hard Drive

When talking about computer technology is an aspect that is almost impossible to miss. It has become so common it has been accepted as the norm. This is the USB technology, a method designed to allow peripheral devices to connect seamlessly with desktop computers and laptops. Actual this technology has become so widespread that many people can not remember a time before USB was available. But to understand changes in this connection technology, and new developments on the horizon, it is important to delve into the history of computer connectivity.

Ancient History

Once, peripherals (mice, keyboards, storage devices, printers, etc.), all connected to a computer in various ways. Keyboards in a circular connectors, which made mice. Printers used an LPT (parallel) connector. Each of these should have a connection spot on the back of a computer. Moreover, each having its own card sitting in a room on the motherboard.

One of the more immediate problems created by these different types of connectors, was that there really was no standard way to connect various devices. It meant pain and frustration for computer users, and difficulties in finding the right peripherals to their machines.

Another problem here was a lack of transfer speed for data from a peripheral to the host computer. Consider for example digital cameras. As these devices became more common, the need to transfer image data from camera to the computer in time became more acute. The same can be said about modern printers and other peripherals.

The Beginning of a new era

In 1996 things started to change. This marked the debut USB 1.0. While it original USB technology was not particularly fast, did offer some advantages. It allowed many types of peripherals to connect to a computer via the same type of connection. It superseded a multitude of serial and parallel ports on your computer and helps to lead to a more streamlined, functional unit.

There was of course USB 1.0 is not very long. Indeed, in 1998, USB 1.1 appeared, which offered improved data transfer speeds. Over time, this type of connection was the standard for a wide range of peripheral units. Consider for a moment, how many devices you connect to your PC or laptop with a USB cable. You can connect your cell phone, your mouse, keyboard, external hard or a monitor. Almost anything can be connected using this method in the modern world.

Yet one of the most important developments to USB enabled, was that the modern mass storage. You are no doubt familiar with thumb drives, external hard drives but have made use of this technology for a long time, so good. This is an important development in the technological world it has given consumers worldwide with a simple, easy way to store their data securely in a portable device.

The advent of USB 2.0

April 2000 marked the another milestone in the USB technology. This was the release of USB 2.0. Compared with USB 1.0, the new generation, offering a wide range of consumer benefits. However, one of the main was an increase in transmission speeds.

Older 1.0 applications were limited to 1.5 MB / s. There was, however USB 2.0 to deliver (theoretically) speeds up to 480 MB / s. Of course it was not exactly accurate, so much of the speed was lost in overhead communication between the USB controller and host computer. But there was a significant amount of speed gained with the new technology.

As a USB 2.0 matured, more and more devices started to make use of the technology. While USB 1.0 laid the foundation for this evolution, the new generation so it will bear fruit. Indeed, during the reign of the second generation it seemed like almost every peripheral a consumer could need was available in this connection type. This was most evident in the number of external hard drives that were available with it. Actually 2.0 industry standard to this day, although things started to change again.

The Future of USB Technology

In 2008, a new USB technology developed. USB 3.0 was announced by the industry. But it was not until early 2010 that the first consumer devices were developed that made use of this new technology. What does it mean for consumers? What differences there between the two types of USB technology?

Firstly, because USB 3.0 is still very new, there are many computers on the market that do not have the capacity to use it. For example, produced a laptop in late 2009 would still have USB 2.0 connection. However, most manufacturers began offering USB 3.0-connections on their devices Built in the late first quarter of 2010. Of course, this technology is backward compatible with older computers, but to realize all the benefits that this new development, host computer, cable and the external device all be USB 3.0 compliant. What benefits can be found here?

The first benefit is a dramatic increase in data transfer speed. How USB 2.0 offers 480 MB / s, the new generation offers a raw transfer rate of 4 GB / s. This is an incredible increase in throughput, and was designed to help high-definition multimedia files, as well as better backup speeds for external hard drives and other mass media storage devices.

Another benefit found with USB 3.0 is that it allows two-way communication. In older applications, all communications had to be initiated by the host computer. But with 3.0 technology, peripheral can initiate communication with the host computer.

An important note about the newest version of USB technology is that it challenges the eSATA connection types. For some users and manufacturers that have eSATA be the best solution, but new USB technology promises to challenge this with similar data transfer speeds, and wider applicability. In short, multiple devices can use USB 3.0 than eSATA connections, including external hard drives, TVs, Blu-Ray players and numerous other options.

Where can I buy a USB cable for my camera?

I have a Sanyo VPC-5500 camera does anybody know where I can buy a USB cord. the one I had a power surge so now that I really need it I can not use it.

It had suffered a power surge? I'm not sure what really happened there. It is easier to get a card reader. Remove the card from the camera and insert it into the reader. USB cord can be purchased at most eletronic stores, even Staples or Office Depot has them.

Lots like Sony's Low-Light Video Camera HDR-CX700V Sony's top-of-the-line consumer camcorder, and it is fair to say that this sucker is loaded. Along with being able to shoot 1920 x 1080 HD video to 60p, the HDR-CX700 a whopping 96 GB of internal flash memory and Memory Stick Duo / SD memory card if you want to add storage.
