Choosing a Compact Digital Camera - What is the Best Brand?
If you're looking for a good compact digital camera, and feel overwhelmed by all the choices This article is for you. It's not so hard to pick a good camera with the right kind of information.
Does Brand Matter?
Yes, brand matters. A company with a reputation for quality and reliability are more likely to give you a satisfactory product, one that meets your needs. Finding a decent "nothing name "product can be a very hit and miss process - if you" miss, "you've wasted your time and possibly your money.
This article focuses Canon cameras - mainly because I've had very positive experiences with Canon products, the ones I own myself and those belonging to family members. My own Canon Powershot model is well made, easy to use, good photos and I've never had any problems with the camera. All that adds up to a good reason to stick with what I know.
Lens Quality
For any camera, lens quality is the first factor in determining image quality. Before buying my own Canon I read some very extensive technical reviews, and narrowed my choices to two possible labels. So I looked at the wide range of standardized test shots as a part of this review, and the quality of the Canon shot impressed me that confirms my experience with a previous Canon digital camera.
In my experience Canon lenses produce crisp colors and well-defined details that turn a good picture into a "wow!" photo. Comparison of images from my Canon, and a camera of another brand that was no competition - In color reproduction, focus, detail and overall impression of shots from Canon was far superior.
Features
Canon cameras are equipped with a basic set of technologies, from the smallest point-and-shoot model to the more advanced SLR types. You can expect to find a nice set of features on each Canon camera without using a fortune, and if you just want a compact model that you can still take good pictures.
These technologies include things like
- Optical Image Stabilization which compensates for camera shake.
- Intelligent contrast correction and red eye reduction will reduce the need for editing.
- Scene and face recognition technology help to improve the exposure and white balance.
- Face Self-timer - the timer turns off when you moved into the picture, and it detects another face. (This is a newer feature, double check to make sure that it is the camera that interests you).
- Optical zoom - maintains quality and resolution when zooms, as opposed to digital zoom. (Available zoom levels will vary from model to model.)
For convenience and general setup I have found the Canon models to be quite satisfactory controls are fairly intuitive, and there is a decent manual to explain more advanced features. User manual for a camera you buy if you do you could miss half the features!
Selecting a specific model
Have chosen a brand (whether it's Canon or you already have a favorite brand) will help you narrow down on a certain compact model. Want a fully automatic point and shoot camera? Or would you like the opportunity for some manual settings, too? Want to know the basics, or are you willing to pay for extra "bells and whistles"? Decision on the maximum you're willing to pay and then look at the models that fit in your range.
Here's a little tip. Most camera companies bring new models often minimal changes between the new model and the previous version. With lots of cameras on the market from the previous release price may fall a bit, to your advantage if you have not need the "newest" model.
I recommend that you check the Canon Powershot SD880. This is a compact model, light enough to carry all day in a jacket pocket or the wrist strap. It seems like a point-and-shoot, and also has several shooting modes with some basic manual controls. This is a nice camera that a beginner can grow into, or it can act as a "grab it and go" out to a professional photographer's bag of tricks.

I dont know which camera to get, HELP?
okay so im settled on whether I should get Canon - PowerShot 10.0-Megapixel Digital ELPH model: SD1200 OR Sony - Cyber-shot 12.1-megapixel digital camera Model: DSC-W220 / P,. Canon has some things that Sony does not have, and Sony has things canon doesn't. such as Canon comes with a Lithium-ion battery and charger, but Sony only has lithium-ion battery and no charger so how should I charge it? also that Canon has extras like wrist & USB & A / V cables. but sony only comes with the camera & battery & software ... sooo IDK what to do, theyre both the same price. HELP? Thank you. I ended to go with the Canon! 
I personally suggest you go for the Canon Powershot. It will be the excellent choice and great buy.
