Digital photography: Overcoming Your Fears manual
When you buy a new digital camera, most people start out with the best intentions to be a truly creative photographer. A look at the thick, complicated technical manual, and the camera switches to auto ... and this is where it gets. As a result, settling most of us for snapshot photography, where our cameras are capable of so much more.
Does this sound like you? Do not worry, you're not alone. The camera manuals reflect the technical power of modern cameras, but they are intimidating for any beginner who just wants to take a decent picture.
Digital cameras are like most computer programs, you can find, you can get by with about ten percent of the available options. So do not get tied up in knots trying to understand everything. Just learn what you need to know and learn it well and you will be well on its way to becoming a better photographer.
Here are a few tips that may just take the complexity out of photography for you.
Tip # 1 Stick with the basics. In the days of film, used good photographers SLR cameras with two main settings, aperture and shutter speed. These were the ingredients of all great photography. Today, cameras come with hundreds of features, but guess what you really need to understand? It is true aperture and shutter speed.
If you can understand these two options you are halfway to becoming a better photographer. Your manual (I never said you could throw it away) will tell you which buttons press your camera. But to really understand what these settings is about, do not rely on manual. There is plenty of information out there workshops, websites, books and ebooks can help.
Practice has never been easier than it is today. Most cameras have a semi-automatic settings, called "aperture priority 'and' shutter priority, "which allows you to interact with one setting while the camera takes care of the other. This is a great way to practice a skill without the fear of getting too many failed engagements.
Tip # 2 Learn from your mistakes. If you just delete each photo that you are not satisfied with, please missing a golden opportunity to learn from your own experience. Photos you consider 'reject' actually contain useful information - you can really learn from your mistakes!
Suppose you experiment with aperture. Try to shoot a scene three times, with three different aperture settings, three slightly different results. In Rather than keep your favorites and delete the others right away, you can transfer them to your computer and take the time to investigate them properly. You can see how each setting changed look of the picture, and which option worked best for that subject. Now you can learn on your own merits and not from some theory in a book.
Have you know that if you right click the mouse over an image on your computer and select 'properties' you will find a lot of information embedded in the file? You do not keep a note of the aperture / shutter speed data; your photo does it for you!
Obviously in the long run, you do not want to keep every single photo you take, but you might want to keep a folder with learning images "to refer to later, with maybe two versions of each item you experiment with. To make it even easier, rename images with relevant titles, for example: Wildflowers / Small Aperture, Herb / Wide Aperture, Waterfall / Fast Shutter, waterfall / Slow Shutter.
Tip # 3 Learn the art and technique. Any problem in photography can not be resolved by the camera. Experienced photographers know that good lighting and creative composition is often important than up-market technology. Actually fail most images not because of poor technique, but because they were taken at the wrong time of day, or photographer have not put enough thought into the mix. Yet everyday I meet people who think all their problems would be solved by a better camera, or some mysterious technique they have yet to learn.
Remember what I said in Tip # 1, aperture and shutter speed are the basic skills and with a little practice, they are not hard to learn. Master them and you are halfway there. The key to being a really good photographer is a balance between academic knowledge and artistic skill. Practice boats, and soon your friends will come to you for the photography tips!
