Learning Photography? Do not Forget Your Camera
Amateurs of digital photography around the world are eager to learn to take better pictures with their digital cameras. Are courses, workshops and Ebooks on offer training, what they need to know?
A few years ago I wrote an e-book to teach beginners the basic principles of good photography. You know, aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, lighting, composition, the kind of thing that is stock-in-trade of any experienced phogographer. Recently I have been surprised by the growing number of people eager to get their hands on this information.
With the Internet apparently take over the world, and the explosion in the availability of books, ebooks and courses on almost any topic, why it so difficult for a new photographer to find out how to use their camera? It is a mystery to the modern age, but I think I may have found the answer.
If someone has a bad experience especially if that experience cost them hard earned dollars, they will tell others. And what they tell me is that they are not happy with most of photography courses and guides on offer.
Many courses and workshops, advertising "digital photography" has little or nothing to do with actual photography. It is true you can sign up to learn the skills better photography and not learn one thing about taking better pictures.
Instead what you get is a workshop on digital imaging, or photo editing. How to fix your bad photos, how to top rainbows and birds in your landscape and how to remove freckles and pimples from your portraits. How to use software which in many cases the customer has not, want not and may not afford.
Are these useful skills? Of course they are, but they're not shooting. At best, the secondary skills that enhance the creative possibilities of photography, for people who choose to go the road. This does not include everyone.
The result could be a generation of 'photographers' who knows more about fixing their mistakes on a computer than to take good pictures at first.
If a customer pays you to teach them photography, they have a right to expect that they will learn to use a camera. If they want learn about computer software, they'll buy another ebook or enroll for another course. If you take their money, then sit them in front of a computer for three days, you have not given them what they paid for. If your customer asks for their money back - so they should.
I could take a pessimistic view and think that some photographers have become so lazy so unskilled that they really think that digital manipulation is more important to photography than skill with a camera. I prefer to think that the customers I've talked to has just been victims of misunderstanding and ill-formed publicity.
Whatever it is, customers beware! Before you hand over your money, find out exactly what you are signing up for. To learn how to become a better photographer, make sure the course, workshop, or e-book is about using your camera, not just a computer. If the software is part of the course, fantastic - you get a well rounded look at the world of photography. If it is the only component shop around, and there are still people out there who want to learn what you will learn.

CCTV install to work? Legally?
The place I work is currently in the process of fitting CCTV through out the factory. This will be in any production area, offices, workshops, etc. Is this legal to just do it? Like when I work there will be a camera pointing straight at my back, on my computer screen. I'm not doing anything wrong, just it's a bit annoying to be honest. Is there any Privacy Act / law? This is in the UK by the way.
When you vote for Lab / Con / Lib you vote for totalitarianism. You is not seen nothing yet. CCTV cameras will eventually be installed in each household.
