To install surveillance cameras in your home
For most people, the idea of cutting holes in their house downright scary. This fear is easily overcome when we look at the benefits of installing your own home security video system since the massive savings by doing it yourself. With this Home CCTV Installation Guide can you be sure to ask appropriate questions, to buy the right equipment and you will know how to install your CCTV security video equipment properly.
If you read this, you have undoubtedly already decided you want a video surveillance system in your home. Whether your reasons due to vandalism, theft, trouble a teenager, or just because of the general security that having a few sets of reliable eye on your home 24 hours a day, you've probably already seen a wide variation in spending on Closed Circuit Security Camera Systems and wondering the best way to go about installing surveillance cameras in your home. Sometimes these costs are due that the higher quality of equipment, other times the difference in cost is simply because of the profits to hold manufacturers, distributors, manufacturers' reps, contractors and security integration companies in the industry. Traditionally get your system checked 5 times before it reaches you, the end user. By installing the system even you automatically avoid any of these markups. When you buy a security system from CCTV Dynamics, you get the added benefit of buying real professional equipment directly from the OEM manufacturer to avoid yet another markup in the traditional sales process. CCTV Dynamics wear only professional equipment that is proven in the field of professional installers in the real world safety situations. Because security contractors are profit oriented, they often sacrifice the quality for a few extra points on the bottom line we see it as a major conflict of interest. Once you decide which recorder is right for you, as cameras you want and where you want them, you can be sure that the only parameter in relation to costs is the efficiency of the equipment, and your peace of mind. Let's move on to the nitty gritty to install your own security video system in your home.
We will tear down the installation process into three sections:
- Measure twice, Cut Once: Preparing to install your home security Surveillance
- Getting it right first time: choosing the right CCTV equipment for the job.
- Getting Dirty: Wiring Your Home the security cameras.
Measure Twice, Cut Once: Preparing to Install Your Home Surveillance System
Most of the work of installing your own home monitoring system is in the front end of the project. This work happens before you ever cut a hole before you ever mount a camera, and should happen before you even buy the equipment.
The absolute first step is to identify the issues at hand. This means write down why you want to install your home security camera system. Identify what you want to see when you're away from home on business or if you want to be able to see your front door from your bedroom or if this is really a "just in case" situation. Walk around your home a few times and think like a criminal. Be aware of lighting around your house. cctv cameras requires a good amount of light to capture crisp, clear, usable images. If there is enough light, it will require another camera, more on this later. Also try to avoid aiming cameras on trees or shrubs, as the constant motion of leaves blowing in the wind will drastically reduce your recording on your camera system. Not only will this process open your eyes, it will likely give you insight into what exactly you want to watch and record on your Digital Video Recorder.
Now that you have a solid idea of what you want to see, you should take a count of the number of cameras it's going to require. Write down how many indoor cameras you need, how many outdoor cameras you need, take notes on the quality of the lighting around your property, these notes come in handy when we get to point 2, and will give you opportunity to design a camera that succeeds on the intended purpose.
The next step is to poke around in your attic and basement or crawl space. Throw in some overalls, grab a flashlight and get to it, but be careful, we are not responsible if you get bitten by a spider or fall through the ceiling, or if your wife locks you from the ceiling. All wiring in your home security system will have to run through the attic or basement of your home. While you're there, pay close attention to the structure of the areas where you think you want to install your camera, also take a closer look at the area above the room where your DVR recorder will be installed. Ask yourself yourself the following questions:
- "If I step on it, I'll fall through the ceiling in my kitchen? (This one is especially important!)
- -How much space is there to run a cable and connector for each security zone camera?
- -Are there any power lines nearby, which can cause interference with my camera's video quality?
- -Is there a hunting or opening where I can run a bunch of wires inside an interior wall to my DVR?
There should now be a plan begins to form in your head. Each camera must have a cord that will go from the camera to the recorder. So look to see where in your attic, as the cable will run. Be sure to avoid going near power lines or fluorescent lights, as this may lead lines interference or ground loops in your video signal. Generally, wire defined in the ceiling above the insulation, although you might want to cross your cord to the rafters for a nicer out installing. If you do this, remember that this will increase the amount of thread, you'll have to run to each camera with a large amount. Also remember not using standard staples, use an insulated staple or clip, so you do not damage the wire accidentally.
Getting it right first time: Choosing The Right Security Installation equipment for your home.
There are many options involved in designing and installing your home security camera system. Even if you do not have to be an expert, it's a smart move to know about the options before you choose which system you want to buy. Do this work now will save you for many hours of frustration when it comes time to install home security system.
Wire:
The wire used for security cameras come in one of two variants. Option one is Siamese Cable. This cable has a full size RG59 shielded coaxial and two power wires under one jacket. It has no premade plug on it, get into a course with either 500 meters or 1000 meters, and you cut it to fit your particular installation. A good quality Siamese cable with 95% copper and a solid copper conductor gives you the best CCTV video quality for wire runs under 500 meters. Do not use RG6 intended to Cable TV which runs on a completely another frequency. The same goes for "quad shield coax, its wonderful stuff if you run cable television or Internet in your spare bedroom, but it has no space transports fragile signals, CCTV cameras produce. Option two is the popular plug and play security camera cord. Plug and Play, or PnP cable provides convenience not having to make any connections, since it comes with its own power and, like it sounds, a plug and play affair with your camera and DVR system. Its thinner, more flexible and will at 25 feet, 50 feet, 75 feet, 100 feet and 150 feet step. Sounds great right? Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy? Not quite. Plug & Play CCTV Cables are very fragile, so they require a gentle hand during the installation, they are also more susceptible to interference when the cable is not shielded and RG59 coax. The connectors on the PnP cables are pre-installed, so your hole for Your request must be greater than the wire itself. Then it's up to you to decide whether you want an easier installation, or better video quality. If you have many power wires in your attic, we highly recommend using genuine Siamese cable. Do not worry, we'll show you how to make connections a little later.
Power Supply:
There are two ways to deliver power to your camera. The way professional installers handle the power problem is to mount a multi-channel power box on a wall somewhere in the vicinity of the DVR. This offers several advantages. One of these benefits is that all your Siamese cable can run to a place, therefore, to simplify your installation. Our power supply boxes also provide a fused central location to protect your camera to increase or shorts in your wiring or troubleshooting your installation should a problem ever arises. It also means you only need an outlet to power all your cameras. The second option is to provide power for cameras individually with single channel transformers or wall washer. This requires an electrical outlet for each security camera. It's a little bit cheaper and offers to give more power if you use very strong infrared cameras that require a lot of juice for night vision to work. Generally, if a camera requires more than 600mA or 0.6 amps on the spec sheet, we recommend running a single transformer. In some cases the best solution is to run a combination of a power box and individual transformers. Some cameras or heated houses requires 24 volts AC instead for the typical 12 Volt DC. If so, we recommend a 12 volt power supply for most cameras and a single channel 24 volt transformer for the higher voltage camera. Also, it is a good time to make sure you have enough power outlets where you want to install your DVR system. You need a plug separate DVR, camera power Box, each transformer and your screen. It is wise also to have another outlet for your Internet router and modem. This is also an ideal place to install your battery backup, so if you lose power, your camera will continue to function correctly.
Camera Position:
Traditional home security cameras located in an elevated position as a ceiling or an Eve, to avoid vandalism. Occasionally you may find it necessary to place a camera lower on the building as a wall. Keeping this in mind you'll have to choose a camera with a rotating base, a 3-axis gimbal and should seriously consider a vandalproof camera as some of our armor domes. For outdoor cameras, super we recommend placing cameras at the bottom of Eve, this gives a clear path to run the wire into ceiling, without leaving it exposed. For indoor cameras, we generally recommend mount dome cameras directly to the drywall ceiling or drop ceiling panels.
Lighting Decisions:
If you have areas with low light, you should consider using an infrared night vision camera or a camera with a flair-up. Infrared cameras will switch to black and white when light gets low enough and the built-in infrared LED light glows red at night, which gives the camera with light that the human eye can not see but the camera can. Infrared will sometimes give an eerie glowing picture quality, though it's a huge advantage when lighting is poor at night and you need a good picture on your system. Sense-Up is a newer technology that allows higher end cameras to see at night in color. They do not work in total darkness, but in low light they really give incredible images. These cameras usually have an OSD or on the screen that will allow the installer to set the camera specific settings for backlight and lighting, sharpness, brightness, and many other parameters.
Indoor Cameras:
Some people are not comfortable having indoor cameras in their homes. Today's high end home CCTV systems are extremely difficult to hack, so privacy really is not a something to be concerned about. That said, all have their own preferences. If you decide to install interior cameras, check out some hidden camera options or some indoor mini-dome cameras to keep things looking good. The last thing I want is a big nasty ball or box camera in my living room. Be careful to choose a hidden camera. We found a huge variance in image quality among the many available cameras. We have also seen many cameras if the spec sheet is not entirely truthful. Our hidden Sony cameras use TRUE SuperHAD CCD chips, and we like them because they have proven reliable and is the best pinhole cameras, we've seen in the semi-low light conditions. We do not tolerate at using hidden cameras in your home without informing anyone in your home for their attendance and we also highly recommend respects the privacy of family members, friends and visitors. We will not sell you a hidden camera if we feel you will use it in a less than ethical fashion.

Getting Dirty: Connecting Your Home Security Cameras the right way.
Start this section by visiting your attic again. Now that you have read about choosing the right cable and know which cameras you want to buy or have already purchased you can start to look a little bit closer to your wire running strategy. Take a look and decide exactly where you want to pay or secure your cables. Take a look around and now that you have cable in your hand, measure to make sure it will all fit into the hunt on your DVR.
Start the installation by drilling holes directly behind where you are going to mount your camera to your home. Make sure to make the hole large enough to fit your plug through them, but not so large that it allows for small woodland creatures that crawl into your attic. Most high-quality cameras come with a mount or housing, which hides the cable, so you want to install the camera mounted directly over the cable hole. Do you want to pull each camera cord without any joints, especially if you use pre-made cables PNP. Collections butts and extra crimps is an invitation to uneeded interference, avoid them at all costs if you want your video quality to be top notch.
Sell your cable inside the house at the selected DVR location. When first there, you can feed the wire up inside wall. If the wall has a header table, you might drill a hole in the header board and feed the wire down to the DVR instead. Run each wire, one at a time, through the path you created earlier, and remained at the end near the hole you drilled for camera installation, be sure to leave a couple extra feet of slack if you move the camera or turn up a few links. Follow this process for each camera until they are all coupled into the DVR location and out of camera placement. Do not tack up any loop until you know your cables are good little later in this installation. Remember to be extra careful when you pull on pre-made plug and play cables. You can find it useful to keep an extra wire hanger around if you need to fish a wire out of tight spots in the wall.
Mount your cameras based on fitting provided. Run the end of the camera wire through the hole you drilled previously and aim the camera in the general direction of what you want to see. Do this for all your cameras. Then would you be visiting the ceiling again, this time you will take the BNC connector (see here to determine what is best for you) if you use title = "500 meters Siamese cctv cable "> RG59 Siamese cable and some flying lead power connector to connect your CCTV cable to your cameras' power and video connectors. The flying lead should labeled with + and - if not, ask them who you bought them from, so cameras would blow up if you hook them up incorrectly. If you use RG59 Siamese cable you will need some wire nuts or beanie connectors (sometimes called Dolphin connector or B connector) to splice your power wire together. Remember, + goes to the red wire and - goes to the black wire, if you make your own connections. At this point you may find these other articles may be useful in detail:
- -Making BNC Connections RG59 Coax Wire
- -Which BNC connector is right for me?
- -How to hookup power cords for your camera
- -How Wire up a CCTV Power Supply Box
You want to make the BNC connectors on your coax cables or just hook up the BNC connector on your Plug n Play cable directly to your camera wire. At this point you can go back to the air-conditioned or heated part of your house and work in comfort.
Your cameras are installed your wires are run and you have a giant spider web of cables in your living room or office or a closet on where you decided to install your DVR. Do you want to mount your power box next. Choose a hidden place where your power cord will reach your outlet and any adjacent walls will not hinder your ability to work inside the box. Use a screwdriver or a punch to knock one of the holes in the adapter, and run the power side of your thread into the box, make sure you have cut the wire, so it is long enough to reach the screw terminals of your power box. DO NOT connect the power supply into the socket at this point! Simply connect each positive (red) wire to the positive (+) terminal inside the box and the negative (black) wire to each negative (-) terminal inside the box. Each camera should have its own positive and negative connector inside the power supply box to protect each camera from overvoltage individually. You'll have to trim about a ¼ inch of insulation from each of the wires to make a good connection. Make that each terminal screw is tightened down securely.
You are now almost ready to fire up your video surveillance system. Connect each male BNC connectors on each of your wires to the relevant female BNC connector on the back of your DVR. Connect your monitor to the system and go ahead and connect a keyboard and mouse, if applicable. You can now proceed and plug each component outlet. Your DVR can skip to life on your own, depending on the DVR you have bought, if not, it does not mean that there is a problem, just press the button on the DVR. When your DVR is powered up and running you can turn the switch on your screen and also on the camera power supply box. If you have wired the system correctly, you must have video on all channels. If you do not, you can read this article:
- -Troubleshoot CCTV video problems
You will now have to enlist a helper to look at the screen while you aim and focus your cameras. Walkie talkies or cell phones are particularly useful in this process. Remember to aim your camera, so any trees, bushes, cars, flags, ceiling fans, flashing or blinking lights on your microwave, etc. are not visible. If this is not possible, do not sweat it, but it will make it much easier later down the road when you want to find video based on motion detection events. If you have fixed lens cameras, your focus is preset, but if you have variable lens cameras, you should read this article to focus your home cameras:
- -Focus your CCTV cameras
You can now go through and tack up any loose threads in your attic, if you choose to do so. You Also check out our articles on motion detection, so you can get the most out of your home DVR system or our articles about how the network your DVR system for external viewing via the Internet.

Does anyone have a Sony Cybershot 7.2 megapixel digital camera?
Im asking because I have one and it has video on it but I can not figure out how to take it from the camera to a disc. Or if it ever does, I dont understand the instructions well, (not electronically inclined) I something very important to register Dec.9 and would like to be able to put it on a disk, so family can see it at a later date. Can anyone help me?
I have the camera too. Put the camera in video mode and record it, save it to your computer by using the link cable. It should not come out as a wmv file or something the computer can play using Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player can burn it to a disc for you. Just make sure that a DVD, not a CD. Good luck!
