New Features from Android 2.1 Android 2.2 Froyo

With all the hoopla lately about Android 2.2 (aka Froyo , which means frozen yogurt by the way) I figured I'd write a brief review of some of the new features you can expect from the newest and best version of the Android OS.

Home Screen

A new tips widget will grace your home page. This widget will help new users on how to configure the main screen, adding shortcuts, adding widgets and how to use multiple home screens.

Another new start screen feature that you can see, dedicated buttons for your phone, Launcher and Browser.

Exchange Support

No doubt, one of Android's most missing features is Exchange support. Well, there will be changing with Android 2.2. Froyo's new and improved Exchange support will include the following features:

• Improved security - Exchange administrators can enforce a password policy across devices with support for numeric or alphanumeric passwords to unlock up a unit
• Remove Clearing - Exchange admins can remotely wipe the phone to factory settings if the device was lost or stolen
• Exchange calendars - will be supported in the Calendar
• Auto-Discovery - With just your username and password, you could easily create and synchronize an Exchange account (requires Exchange 2007 +)
• Global address look-up - will now be available in e-mail program that allows users to auto-fill recipient names from the library

Camera and Gallery

A new and improved Gallery will allow you to peek into image stacks using a zoom gesture.

The camera will now have buttons on the screen which will provide easy access via a new user interface to control zoom, flash, white balance, focus, geo-tagging and exposure.

Moreover, now the video camera, you can easily choose the size and quality desired for your video to make uploading to the web or send video via MMS easier and more efficient. Records video at night or poor light conditions are better now, and the LED flash is a light source when shooting video.

Make phone a mobile hotspot

Apparently, all units will not support this feature, but phones like the Nexus One will. When configured as a hotspot, your Froyo device parts it's connectivity with up to 8 other units. You can also use the 3G connection on your phone (via a USB connection) providing Internet access on your Windows or Linux laptop. (Yes, you can get this apps on Android 2.1, but it will now be supported embedded)

More keyboard language

Users who speak multiple languages will love this feature. You can now add multiple languages to your keyboard and effortlessly switch between Latin-based input language by reading across the space bar. Not only does this impact on the keys, but it follows the auto-correct dictionary as well.

Improved Performance

Performance increases come from all over the Android 2.2 update, here are the highlights:

• Browser - By providing faster loading of JavaScript V8 engine will increase the speed of the browser
• Dalvik performance boost - in CPU-intensive tasks, an increase of 2x to 5x can be seen
• Kernel Memory Management Boost - Memory regeneration with up to 20x. Applications will move faster on devices with less memory

Flash!

Flash game addicts welcome! Adobe has just recently released Flash 10.1 for devices running Android 2.2 (there are some beta builds of OS out there). So not only will Now you can play flash games on your Android 2.2 device, any kind of interactive content, but will now work flawlessly on your device.

There is one drawback to this yourself, you will now see the annoying flash ads when browsing the Internet. But in this writers opinion, it's a small price to pay for the many other advantages of flash.

Misc Improvements

Bluetooth

• Share contacts with other phones
• Voice dialing
• Support BT enabled car & desk docks
• Improved compatibility with car kits and headsets

2.6.32 kernel upgrade

• HIGHMEM support for RAM> 256MB
• SDIO planning and Bluetooth enhancements

Applications

• App Error Reports - A new bug reporting instructions feature allows developers to receive crashes and freeze reports from users of their Android Market apps
• Apps can be installed on external storage (microSD card for example)
• Apps can participate in data backup and restore, which allows users to reset their device to factory settings and not lose any personal data

Cloud to device messaging - Android apps can use Android Cloud to device messaging to allow mobile alarm, send to phone and 2-way push synchronization abilites

Camera / Camcorder

• Video FPS doubled from 10 to 20
• The camera now supports portrait orientation, zoom control, exposure data and a miniature utility
• The camcorder also allows apps to determine the hardware capabilities

User Interface - Users can now choose "car mode" and "night mode" controls to configure their UI but they like.

Looks pretty good, right? No official word has been said about when Android 2.2 update will be pushed over the air, but word around the Internet speculating that to be within a month. So cross your fingers and keep checking back with TalkAndroid we'll be sure to make a lot of noise when the official update being rolled out.

my android camera is not working properly?

So I got my camera before my family vacation (August 14), and when we left for 7 days it was working fine until we came back. Now when I take a picture, it turns out like colorful stripes. I tried cleaning the lens but it did not work. I do not know what happened. I could then get some help? thx
