Camera Zoom - Getting the Most Out of Your Lens

Almost every camera on the market are equipped with some sort of zoom function. What is funny about zooms is that they almost always used incorrectly or never used. Many photographers start out considering the zoom to be too "far away stuff" and never understand the impact through of a zoom correctly can have on their images. Keeping that in mind, here are some ways to use your zoom, next time you're out to take pictures.

If you do not know the term "crop" it refers to removing all the extra stuff in the picture that the photographer should have avoided when recording the image. Rather than cut the junk out of the background behind to use the camera's zoom and fill the frame with only the important parts of the image. Pictures of family gatherings are notorious for this, as most photographers do not fill the frame with the subject, and instead take an image that consists mostly of the background.

No one type of camera lens will reflect the subject with 100% accuracy. In any form of lens is a little bit of distortion, and this can and should inform your decisions with your camera zoom. For example, taking portraits with a zoom lens from a little farther away will give you far better results than putting the camera right in someone's face. Give it a try next time you take a portrait style image. Take a few pictures up close then a few of your zoom and see what the subject likes better.

If you happen to have a powerful zoom camera and large lens, it might be time to try your hand at being devious. It is obviously not a good idea to invade the privacy of your friends and family, but candid pictures are a great way to catch people you love as their natural themselves. When you're far from the action, people act more natural and you'll find that you capture great moments that could have been missed if everyone was aware of the camera.

Zoom isn't a tool to be used only when you're far away. You should use it to improve your composition that your subject comfortable and capture unplanned moments are otherwise difficult to catch. A lens that is able to zoom is a powerful and versatile ally in your quest to become a great photographer, so try and find new and creative ways to use it. You'll love the results.

Can you zoom while recording a video on my camera?

I have a Sony Cybershot camera, 8 / 1 megapixel, and I noticed in a video that I did not be able to zoom during a video call. Is this normal or do I need to do anything special to get my camera to zoom:? Thank you)

this is normally - this is first and foremost a still camera is not a video camera. I dont know about your model but on the few I've used, you can set the zoom before you press the shutter button. Its a fixed focal length, but should do the job.
