The Definitive Cameras Glossary, Every Feature Explained

Security industry has done quite well in the past decade because of the knowledge products to ensure safety.

Many business entrepreneurs wishing to start their own face many obstacles due to the extreme competition online and not enough technical knowledge about products.

The security camera industry is constantly evolving with the addition of cameras and the latest cutting-edge technology. This has driven many technical terms associated with each unit as "frames per second," "horizontal lines", "frames per second" etc.

It is very important to understand the technical know-how of the concepts.

This helps you be aware of whether a product and its features with your system to make an informed decision about a purchase.

So to help you out, we've put together a quick guide to all the major terms you'll hear in the industry.

PAL PAL or Phase Alternating Line, is a standard video system used in eastern European countries that transmits 25 frames per second. 625 individual scan lines form a frame.

NTSC NTSC or National Television System Committee, used mostly in North and South America is sending 30 frames per second. 525 individual scan lines making a single image.

CCD sensor, CCD or Charged Coupled Device sensor in cameras to take pictures that have a better quality and less noise compared to CMOS sensors.

CMOS sensor A CMOS sensor captures images & uses less power compared to a CCD sensor and is cheaper. It works well for wireless or battery-powered cameras

Pinhole Camera In pinhole cameras, one of the oldest types of cameras you can capture high quality still images but blurred moving images.

CCTV Security Camera System I CCTV security camera technology, images can be captured and stored without the use of tape and can be wireless. It records also act and react by setting off alarms, call the police and more.

720p 720p is the resolution or quality of the image displayed on a screen with high resolution, resulting in sharp images. "720" represents the number of horizontal scan lines (720) of a solution. "P" is the progressive scan, giving a smoother picture with 720 lines that are updated 30 times a second.

1080i Here "1080" is the number of horizontal scan lines. "I" stands for interlaced scanning, a process in which frames are blended to form a smooth image with less flickering.

LUX LUX is a method to measure the amount of light necessary for the safety camera to take pictures. A lower LUX means that the camera has the ability to see images more clearly in the dark. Eg 1 LUX - good quality pictures in the late evening, 0.5 LUX - dim lit areas at night, 0.05 LUX - takes pictures better than humans at night.

DVR digital video recorder or DVR is a general term for a device that records TV in digital format. It encodes video data in MPEG-1 / MPEG-2 formats and store the data in a hard drive and the ability to pause live TV and continue without missing any part of a program.

Wired Security Camera A "wired" camera is hard-wired to the monitor and recording systems. The image cables needed to transfer images from your camera, then changed to a signal and transmitted to screens where the signals are decoded in living pictures.

Wireless Security Camera Wireless cameras as the name suggests is "wire-free" and use electronic signals to relay images to the monitor / receivers and converted to images.

IP Security Camera IP security cameras using Internet protocol to send images and control signals over an Ethernet connection. Also known as network cameras, used primarily for monitoring like the analog closed-circuit television.

Super HAD CCD Super HAD CCD sensor, a Sony product that provides twice the performance than traditional CCD. Used in security cameras, these sensors cameras to be in environments for long periods of intensely bright ambient light or darkness.

RF RF stands for Radio Frequency and safety cameras, video signals must be modulated to an RF signal to be transmitted over a wireless network.

Interline CCD Sensor Interline CCD are typically used in image sensors used for capturing moving images as surveillance cameras. They avoid image smear because light can not affect the masked pixel storage area, these safety Cameras are cheap.

Horizontal Definition This is the highest amount of individual picture elements recognizable in a single scan line. Clarity and sharpness in an image produced the camera depends on a greater number of lines results in higher definition images.

Angular Field of View In cameras, the AOV is defined by visual field, the camera cover, which is a few degrees above and below the angle it is pointing. The recorded images depend on the size and area covered by the camera.

Effective Distance is measured by how far the camera can "see". There 2 types of effective distance: distance day and night away. Security cameras use infrared technology to capture detailed images from a distance.

BNC Connector A BNC is a video connector is usually used in a wireless security camera system. It uses RF to send images that surveillance cameras to monitors and recording equipment.

I'm looking for a single-camera, wireless security camera that will continuously transferred 1 week's video to a hidden hard drive.
