Camera Tripod - Do not Waste Money on a Stand Until You Read This

A common mistake I often see with photo enthusiasts is that they are trying to accomplish by using inexpensive racks. Often these are difficult to use and can not keep the camera still. This is really a waste of money and for a slightly larger investment, they could have an excellent frame that makes life easy. Here are some of my tips in what to look for when buying a tripod.

Tip 1 - Buy a quality brand

It is a simple fact of life that you tend to get what you pay for, and that the most respected names tend to produce the best equipment. Look at the equipment used by professionals and you will see the same producers appears again and again. There is a reason for this and it is they are good reliable racks.

Tip 2 - Buy head and legs separately

Often this is only possible with quality manufacturers. The tripod head has many variations and not all will suite everyone. Many tripod legs are also quite different and have different functions. I always ensure that my tripod leg allows for the removal of the center column and legs to spread very widely. This gives me the opportunity to place the camera very low to the ground. Another useful feature is being able to remove the center column and paste it horizontally across the tripod legs. This is great for macro work.

Tip 3 - Do specialist design

I have a tripod, which allows the legs can be positioned independently of each other and at all angles. Rather than a traditional center column has a long neck, which can also be positioned at any angle. This is a very specialized design and I bought it specifically for macro work. However, it is published as a landscape fixture, which I would argue it is not. I would go mad trying to position the camera if I had to use this for landscape work.

Tip 4 - Do too many legs Sections

Some designs have 4 or more leg sections extending to give his tripod height. Remember the more leg sections less stable tripod. Yes several sections make for a smaller tripod when they do, but you want a tripod to provide a solid base from which to shoot. I class these smaller racks moving racks for infrequent use.

Tip 5 - What is the maximum load

Good tripod manufacturers will publish maximum loads for their products. You need to secure the load capacity of your rack is at least 4-5 kg. It can seem like overkill when the camera only weighs about one kilogram but this additional load capacity will make all the difference when you're outside and the wind is blowing.

Tip 6 - A precision Head

I have a number of tripod heads, but my favorite is the pan and tilt, where I have to adjust each direction movement separately. This may seem cumbersome at first but soon becomes a habit. I can quickly position the head safely and with precision. I also have a ball head, that can be placed at any angle, but I find it less accurate and difficult to use and locks securely in place. Take your time in choosing a head and make sure to find it easy to use when composing your images.

Tip 7 - Quick Release plates

A good head should have some sort of quick release plate attached to the bottom of the camera. The plate then cut into tripod head and can be triggered by pulling a lever or pushing a button. This makes fastening and remove the camera quick and easy. If you have more than one camera, buy extra quick release plates and leave them attached to the camera body.

Follow these tips when you buy your tripod and you will not be disappointed. Do not waste your money buying poor quality products that you will find yourself either not using them, or even worse, throwing them away.

On camera tripods, is how you meant to turn the camera from the quick realease plate without damaging it?

My camera is fixed on the release plate without visible safe way to remove it. Tea is a tripod Hama Star 61 Do you know how tight you are supposed to turn the solid tea release plate?

There must be something on plate to apply to remove it. What is the make and model of the tripod? I do not know anything about this kind of stand. Try to take it to the store where you bought it and ask if they can help you with that. It should be just tight enough to keep it safe.
