Acute-Matte vs. pentaprism?
I'm trying to decide between two cameras. I'm not any kind of an expert at all, but I remember using a Minolta Maxxum 3xi back in the early 90s and it was easy to use and took nice pictures. But someone also has a Maxxum 400si for sale, and I am wondering which of the two is better. One difference between them is that for manual focusing, the 3xi has "acute-matte" and 400si has a pentaprism viewfinder. I do not know what the difference between them. Would be clearly better than the other? Many thanks in advance for your help.
Apples and oranges, there is no direct correlation between the two. A pentaprism viewfinder, the large piece of glass in the "hump" holding the viewfinder. This 5-sided glass prism is what allows you to see what the lens sees and turns the image right side up. "Accute Matte" focusing screen is a term, the flat glass under pentaprism, focusing point markers framing lines and the like. It is possible to have a matte screen like this on a camera with a pentaprism viewfinder or a camera with a penta mirror, the other method to get the view through the lens into in the viewfinder.

Digital SingleLens Reflex Camera $101.96 A digital singlelens reflex camera (digital SLR or DSLR) is a digital camera that uses a mechanical mirror system and pentaprism to direct light from the lens to an optical viewfinder on the back of the camera. The basic operation of a DSLR is as follows: for viewing purposes, the mirror reflects the light coming through the attached lens upwards at a 90 degree angle. It is then reflected twice by the pentaprism, rectifying it for the photographers eye. During exposure, the mirror assembly swings upward, the aperture narrows (if stopped down, or set smaller than wide open), and a shutter opens, allowing the lens to project light onto the image sensor. A second shutter then covers the sensor, ending the exposure, and the mirror lowers while the shutter resets. The period that the mirror is flipped up is referred to as viewfinder blackout. A fastacting mirror and shutter is preferred so as to not delay an action photo. All of this happens automatically over a period of milliseconds, with cameras designed to do this 310 times a second.
