Camera and Photography: Discover a Great Lens for Macro Photography - Tamron 60mm Macro
The Tamron AF 60mm F / 2 Di II LD [IF] MACRO 01:01 lens can be bought. What is a name, anyway? What about all those letters? Are they really important?
Below are descriptions of the letters:
- SP = High Performance Specifications
- AF = Autofocus
- F / 2 = aperture designation for the largest aperture (Lens opening)
- Di = designed for digital SLR cameras only (can not be used on a film camera)
- LD = Low Dispersion glass
- IF = Internal Focusing
As you can see letters indicate lots of technical jargon. Are they critical? They certainly are.
Since the letters stand for lens specifications, they allow us to know exactly what is happening in the Tamron 60mm Macro lens.
If the VC and the USD was in the list, will this lens be even better. VC stands for Vibration Compensation, USD stands for Ultrasonic Silent Drive. It would add something like Image Stabilization and Fast Focus. But if you add these two elements would essentially price this lens out of the ballpark to the desired users.
Intended users? APS-C type camera owners are the intended users ... I know several letters. But APS-C cameras are the digital SLR cameras with a modified sensor that is less than "full frame". APS-C cameras include the likes of Digital Rebels in Canon line and the D5000 in the Nikon line.
The fabulous part about is for APS-C cameras is that these cameras now have a really good macro lens available for them.
There are two elements in particular that have been mentioned in the individual review of the Tamron 60mm Macro lens.
- Super quality pictures. All reviewers agreed that image quality was beyond their expectations. As all dedicated macro lenses are prime (which means single focal length instead of zoom lenses), they usually give better image quality just because they only have one focal length. This takes some of the technological guesswork out of how to make excellent image quality at all focal length zoom.
- Depth of Field. The plane of focus, a macro lens, was narrow enough, even in the smaller openings to produce a pleasant blur, or bokeh effect.
This statement from the manufacturer is big: The Tamron 60mm Macro lens is the only lens in the world, boasts an F/2.0 aperture, this focal length. There are several lenses which has an aperture of f/2.8, but none have F/2.0.
It is a macro lens, but it is not the only type of photography you can do with this lens. It is a very nice portrait lens as well. Many photographers use a 50mm lens for portraits, but this one performed admirably to take sharp portraits.
Are there any problems?
There actually is a feature which has caused some negative comments. The lens has autofocus with manual override. This means that you can use the camera to focus automatically, but if you feel you can adjust focus manually to get it sharper, you can do it. The appeal is to review photographers had problems with this feature because the lens tends to try to return to autofocus.
This is not an uncommon problem with macro photo lenses. The problem is a result of the very nature of macro photography. The camera is so close to the subject that it has a tendency to have trouble finding the pivot. With Tamron 60mm Macro lens testers decided that they were able to master this problem, but it was somewhat of a negative in their assessment.
The general consensus is that the Tamron 60mm Macro lens is an excellent lens for entry level and intermediate level digital SLR cameras. It gives photographers a great place to start to close up shots without having to pawn their first-born.

What is the difference between DSC, SLR, point and shoot, and extended zoom?
I want to buy a camera and Im confused with all the camera jargon.
DSC = Digital still camera (in simple terms: a camera that takes stills) SLR = Single Lens Reflex (in simple terms: a type of camera that gives users full control over camera a through-the-lens view through an optical viewfinder, and a range of interchangeable lenses to maximize creativity) Point & Shoot = Traditional: a camera that operate automatically (hence the name). The term has since evolved with the introduction of new features and capabilities, which are commonly used today to describe any camera with built the lens. Extended zoom = Classifies all point & shoot camera has a built-in lens with 10x zoom or more [1]. Great for nature shots and sports shots. These cameras usually has full manual controls and optical image stabilization stabilization. Also known as "ultra-zoom" cameras.
