Interview: The Technical Details For Your Camera And Video Production
While content is important for the interview because it is the video picture and sound matter as well. Here are a few final tips to create a technically great interview on a low budget with non-invasive emotional equipment.
1. Prepare questions before the interview and write them down.
2. Become familiar with your recording equipment and test it before you begin the interview.
3. Use the highest quality video camera and microphone(s) you can.
-Digital video cameras have become much more affordable, and you can find one at every price point.
-Use an external microphone if possible. This could be a boom microphone you put on top of the camera or a microphone stand or a neck cord mic you put on someone's lapel.
-If you know that your camcorder does not record the greatest sound, another option is to invest in a small digital audio recorder as well, and place so close to the interview subject as possible. You or one of your tech savy children) will be able to synchronize the sound recorded on this recorder to your video later. This is sometimes a great idea to do anyways just as a backup in case something goes wrong with your camera.
4. For video interviews:
-Mount the camera on a tripod
-Position the camera a few feet from your interviewee
-Focus on the interviewee's face, torso and hands
-Avoid using the zoom feature
-If you use a separate audio recorder positioning it between you and the interviewee and testing to ensure that both your voices recorded at a good volume.
Test the sound with the interviewee in his seat, he or she will be before you begin the conversation and adjust the microphone volume.
5. Interview in a quiet, well lit room and avoid noise from:
-Fluorescent
Phoned-watches
-Heating and cooling systems
-Ringing phones
-TVs, radios, music
-Other talks
-Lawn mowers, low-flying planes, trains, trucks, motorcycles
-Pets
Basically as soon as you turn on a camera you'll find out how noisy the world is. Do not hesitate to interrupt the conversation, before the sound is gone. You'll be glad you did. Just make sure you communicate with your topic of conversation, what you do, so they do not wonder why you have stopped to engage them.
6. Be sure the band has begun recording before you start talking!

My miniDV camera has a microphone jack. Is there anything I can do to still use a mic?
Are there any adapters or anything? Also, if possible, how much the small little "low", microphones often go to? The ones you clip on humans, or stick to the end of a broomstick for an impromptu boom lol. I have a Panasonic PV-GS39, by the way. The answers are great so far! Keep em coming!
Most consumers camcorders do not have a mic-in jack.
